Shelton’s professional background includes years of television experience at some of the largest media corporations in the United States, working in promotions and news as a reporter, assignment manager, line producer, and field producer.
Her work has been published internationally and presented throughout North America and Europe, with research spanning business, management, marketing, communication, and public relations. She is the author of more than 20 articles. Her articles have appeared in Athens Journal of Mass Media and Communication, Journal of Social Media for Learning, Celebrity Studies, Business Research Yearbook, Journal for the Theory, Research, and Practice of Media and Marketing Communication, Quarterly Review of Business Disciplines, Journal of Social Communications, and other publications. She has presented over 45 refereed papers at national and international conferences in the last decade.
However, her primary focus is on student development. To this end, she regularly presents with undergraduate students at peer-reviewed academic conferences, co-authors papers with undergraduates in peer-reviewed journals, and accompanies students on both domestic and study abroad programs. Widely recognized for her student-centered approach, she has been nominated multiple times for the university's Excellence in Teaching Award and has won the Mark Gould Award for teaching excellence. Shelton is widely traveled in Europe, the U.S., and elsewhere, speaking at invited presentations and teaching study abroad courses.
She holds the Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) credential and is a member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and the Educators Academy Professional Interest Section, and has served as a Councilor in the Humanities division of the Council on Undergraduate Research. Additionally, she serves as a subject-matter expert for the American Council on Education.
